South Island Counselling rents the former rectory building, located between St. Luke's church and the hall. South Island is an important part of St. Luke's community and is supported by St. Luke's through the provision of a rent subsidy of around $12,000 per year.
South Island Counselling was established as a registered charity in 1975. Since then, more than 15,000 people in the Capital Region District have received mental health counselling at the Centre. The Centre's commitment to providing counselling to every person – regardless of their ability to pay – is a lifeline to many low‐income clients who cannot afford help.
Counselling services are calculated on an income-based fee of 0.1% of the client's gross income up to a maximum of $120.00 per session and a minimum fee of $50.00 per session. For those unable to pay the minimum, they also offer a subsidy for qualified applicants. They also offer supportive, professional level training for clients, professionals and the general public.
Their professionally trained counsellors see people for a wide range of issues such as depression, family conflict, low self-esteem, marital conflict, sexual, emotional, or physical abuse, grief and loss, parent-child problems, relationship issues, and spiritual concerns.
