At sundown on Sunday, November 11th, parishioners at St. Luke’s, along with people across Canada, took part in the Bells for Peace celebration.
When people in Europe learned of the armistice on Nov. 11, 1918, many celebrated by rushing to churches to ring the bells that were silenced during the war. News of the end of fighting in the First World War travelled through Europe, in part, by the eruption of church bells that people rang in celebration.
A century later on Sunday, November 11th, bells in communities across Canada chimed 100 times at sunset to mark each year since the armistice. Parishioners at St. Luke’s took part in this celebration by ringing the church bell 100 times.
