It's September and Time for Another Cemetery Newsletter
While we know that many of you on the e-mail list don't live in the Victoria area, please share this e-mail with family members who live in the area and with others who would be interested in this cemetery news. As well as recent "What's New in the Cemetery" news, I have included information about some upcoming events at St. Luke's. You are welcome at any or all of these upcoming events. |
Community Cemetery Cleanup MorningThis Saturday, September 21st - 9:30 -11:30 am Please drop in at any time on Saturday morning to assist with the cleanup. Please bring gloves and, if possible, tools such as clippers, scrapers, a rake, or an outdoor broom. Many hands make light work. Everyone welcome! We will hold another Fall Cleanup on Saturday, October 26th. |
Last Post Markers
St. Luke's Cemetery has been fortunate to receive four markers for the unmarked graves of veterans through the Last Post Fund and we are applying for two more this year. We received markers for: James Stewart Simpson in 2018; Constance Pell Thompson in 2020; Jack Halston in 2020; and John Stanley Priest in 2021. For more infomation visit:

Veterans' List Will Be Updated Soon
A volunteer has identified a number of other veterans, who hadn't been included on our Veterans' List at St. Luke's website. So the list at the website will be updated soon. The list can be found at the Veterans in St. Luke's Cemetery page: https://www.stlukesvictoria.ca/our-community/st-lukes-historic-cemetery/pages/veterans-in-st-lukes-cemetery. Or you can go directly to the list at this link, where you can check if your relative's name is on the list. Blessing of the Animals ServiceSunday, October 6, 2024 You and your pet are invited to a Blessing of the Animals service. This will be a short service (about 30 minutes long) in the church with a blessing of the animals at the end. You may also bring a picture of a pet (living or deceased) so that the pet can be blessed or remembered. Please invite your friends and their pets to come to this service with you. No Stone Left AloneThursday, November 7, 2024 On Thursday, November 7th, Grade 8 students from Cedar Hill Middle School will visit St. Luke's Cemetery to place poppy rocks on veterans' markers for their observance of No Stone Left Alone The aim of this event is to educate students about Canada’s rich history of service to country and to remember our fallen by placing the Legion symbol of remembrance, the poppy, at veterans' headstones. Service of Remembrance - 10 am
A Service of Remembrance will be held on November 10th at 10 am. The service will start in the church and then will move outside to honour the veterans in St. Luke's Cemetery. The names of the 161 veterans resting or commemorated in St. Luke's Cemetery will be read and remembrance pots will be placed on their graves. The service will be livestreamed starting at 10 am as well as recorded to view later at your convenience. There will also be an 8 am in person service in the church. |
