News from St. Luke's Cemetery
Happy Family Day! It's time to share some news from St. Luke's Cemetery. Family Day seems a fitting day to share some cemetery news as cemeteries are, in their own way, about families. |
It's Spring in St. Luke's Cemetery
The snowdrops are out and it's spring in St. Luke's Cemetery. By this time of year, the Christmas arrangements still on the graves are looking out of place. If you placed an arrangement on a family grave before Christmas, could you please recover it by the beginning of March. The Cemetery Committee will remove any seasonal arrangements remaining on the graves in March. Spring is a lovely time to visit the cemetery. The snowdrops on the hillside are out and the daffodils and aubrieta will be in bloom soon. For more infomation visit: https://www.stlukesvictoria.ca/news/its-spring-in-st-lukes-cemetery--533

Dedication of Footstones in St. Luke's Cemetery February 16, 2022
A ceremony to dedicate footstones to honour the military service of Newfoundland-born veterans, William Sweetland Morry and Thomas Graham Morry, was held in St. Luke's Cemetery on February 16th. These footstones were designed and created by Stewart Monumental Works Ltd. in Victoria through the Trail of the Caribou Research Project under Michael Pretty, president and founder. His brainchild led to the development of this project as a way of honouring Newfoundlanders, who have served their country (whether Newfoundland or Canada) no matter where they now lie. A special thank you to Chris Morry, who organized the dedication and provided the background information, and to the Rev. Daniel Fournier, who filled the role of honorary Regimental Padré. We are always pleased when families gather to honour family members buried in St. Luke's Cemetery. St. Luke's Veterans' List is Now Updated
The remains of at least 155 veterans are interred or commemorated in St. Luke's Cemetery. Please open and view the list (updated February 21, 2022) from the link below to check if your relative's name is on the list. We are gradually adding more veterans to the list as we are told of the military service of those resting in St. Luke's Cemetery. As well, we were fortunate to be able to hire a student through the Canada Summer Jobs program, who identified veterans and found the links to their military service. If you would like to add the name of a relative or friend who is a veteran whose name isn't on the list or send further information about the veteran, please contact Barb Prescott by e-mail, or St. Luke's Office by e-mail, or phone 250-477-6741. We are happy to receive further information to add to our records. For more infomation visit: https://www.stlukesvictoria.ca/pages/veterans-in-st-lukes-cemetery
